BECAUSE DEMOCRATS CAN WIN—WITHOUT THE NPV COMPACT.

WHO WE ARE

The Electoral College shaped the Democratic Party into the nationwide civil rights coalition it is today. It continues to push both parties to look beyond the regions where they dominate and to engage with a more diverse group of American voters. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact threatens to take America backwards and to create more instability and distrust in our democracy.

WHAT WE DO

We educate our fellow Democrats and all Americans about the dangers of the NPV interstate compact and the ongoing benefits of the Electoral College for electing the President and Vice President.

EDUCATE

Democrats for the Electoral College continues a tradition of Democrats and civil rights leaders defending the Constitution’s process for presidential elections. Did you know…

  • JFK defended the Electoral College against racists who wanted to end it.

  • Civil rights leaders supported the Electoral College as critical for minority voters.

  • The NPV campaign works with election deniers to push their plan.

ADVOCATE

Policymakers need to understand the unique dangers of the NPV interstate compact proposal, which would manipulate the Electoral College in an attempt to synthesize a nationwide election. Dangers of this include…

  • Allowing a candidate to win with a small, regional plurality of the national vote.

  • Creating a greater incentive for voter suppression in some states.

  • Relying on non-compact states to cooperate or else create a constitutional crisis.
